Alice Tisdale Hobart was born Alice Nourse in Lockport, New York on January 28, 1882. In 1910, Alice went to China to teach at a girls' school in Hangchow, where she met Earle Tisdale Hobart, an executive of the Standard Oil Company of New York. They married in 1914 and spent the early years of their marriage in Manchuria amid the turbulence that followed the overthrow of the Manchu dynasty.
